The Ward C1 Courtyard Refurbishment at Chapel Allerton Hospital involved the complete transformation of an existing external space, creating a more accessible, practical, and welcoming environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
The project commenced with the removal of existing paving, raised planting beds, and external furniture, followed by excavation and infill works to prepare the site for redevelopment. Comprehensive groundworks were then undertaken to provide a robust foundation for the new courtyard layout and finishes.
The refurbished courtyard now features resin-bound surfacing, re-laid and jet-washed stone flags, and new soft landscaping and planting to enhance the overall appearance and
usability of the space. Bespoke timber raised planters and a custom-built potting bench were also installed, creating a durable, low-maintenance outdoor environment that supports wellbeing within the hospital setting.
A key challenge of the project was that the courtyard was landlocked within a live hospital environment, requiring careful planning and coordination to minimise disruption to patients, staff, and hospital operations throughout the works. Despite these logistical constraints, the project was successfully delivered on time, providing a high-quality outdoor
space for all users.
